How They "Find" More Babies for AdoptersThe US Juvenile Court System and Child Protective ServicesMany children in the United States are being removed from their homes on the basis of unsubstantiated reports of abuse made by anonymous callers. There is no penalty to the caller who knowingly makes a false report. With the goal of obtaining more federal funding, the children are placed with foster care providers rather than relatives who are not foster care providers while social workers determine whether parents are fit parents. Often the foster care provider is a "fost-adopt". Unlike the old-style foster care provider, a fost-adopt is someone whose goal is to get a child. The juvenile courts in United States operate on the premise that the "best interests of the child" must come first. Judges rely on social workers and others to tell them what the best interests of the child are. Social workers who have become friends with the fost-adopts often claim that children will be traumatized going back to their families after a period away - even when there has been on-going visitation by the child's relatives. After a period of time as short as 12 months, both the abusive parent and another non-abusive parent may have their parental rights terminated in the interest of the prospective adopter. The outcome of putting the so-called "best interests of the child" first often means all ties to family are cut without any proof that parents are unfit.
