A word about terminology:
The word "birthmother" is used here for search engine placement
ONLY. No mother is an incubator or "birth thing" - she is
a human being, a mother.
Labeling single mothers (and other family members) as "unwed"
or “birthmothers” ("birthmom", “birth father”) makes it
seem that they are merely an object meant be used as the source of
a baby for adoption. This dehumanizing “birth” terminology is similar
to the label “bastard” except that it is applied to the family not
the child. It denies the relatedness of natural family members. Siblings,
brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandson, granddaughter, grandchild,
child, grandmother, grandfather, ancestors, relative etc.
Using words implying a mother can have an “ex” relationship with
her child and be a mother only prior to or at birth is very misleading.
A person usually gets over an ex boyfriend or girlfriend, but a
mother will never get over the loss of her child. Losing the opportunity
to raise her child, even if her child is still alive, will affect
a mother for life. Even most people who have adopted an unrelated
child will tell you that losing that child after nine months together
would be a great loss for them. For a natural mother whose child is
adopted-out, the loss
may increase over time as she misses out on the moments they
might have had together.
Adopted child? "Birthmother"? Scared and feeling alone
or lonely, embarrassed or ashamed? Sometimes just talking to someone
who has "been there" - who can help you with the wording
of a letter or let you cry - or laugh - about a situation dealing
with an agency or social worker "counselor" can be a great
relief. Even hearing a caring voice on the phone can be helpful. In-person
support is really great if you can find it. Is it better to contact
someone through email, telephone, snail mail or just show up on their
doorstep? Is it better to hold back some information so they might
contact you again? You have a right to contact your long-lost relatives.
But, what is the best way to do it? Will agencies or state social
workers censor your letters and cards? What reaction might you get
from your son, daughter, natural mother? Should you leave a phone
number before you state your business? Does that mean your relative
just needs some time to adjust emotionally?
What emotions can you expect and how long until you adjust emotionally
in your healing journey? Learn from others experiences.
