Adoption Myths Debunked
"A child is better off raised
by an unrelated married couple than by her own parents if her mother
is single at the time she is born."
"A child is better off raised
by an older person than by her young mother."
"A child is better off with
wealth than with her own mother or father."
Most
statements made about adoption are sweeping generalizations like those
above, based more on prejudice than reality. They do not take
into account a specific situation or the real emotional needs of a
child or his mother. The consequences of unplanned pregnancy can last
a lifetime.
In countries like Australia women and men are protected
from adoption scams and there are very few adoptions. Read the following
information and consider it carefully.
From an adopted person, explaining the hurt of having been surrendered
to adoption:
"I was always told by my a-parents that 'bmom wanted to go
to college'. THAT was the one and only reason I was given pretty
much.
Is that a good enough reason??????
It was me, or it was college. Well, sorry, you lose. "
Note to adoptees: Your mom was probably prompted by social workers
about what to put down on the paperwork - she had no idea how the
information would later be used against her. She was pressured by
her parents and led to believe both of you would be dirt poor forever
- with no food, no diapers, no nothing - if she kept you. Sadly, with
only a little help she might have been able to keep you AND finish
school.
Note to pregnant mothers: Look for single mothers groups and ideas
on how to keep and nurture your own
child.
"There
may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there
must never be a time when we fail to protest." - Elie Wiesel
